61vandoornslmfeature7172010Ovid, Michigan (Saturday, July 17, 2010): The North VS South Shootout 100 starting field rolled out with former Pro Late Models driver at the Big “O”, Eric Lee and Veteran Dave Stehouwer leading the strong 22-car field of Outlaw Super Late Models to Chief Starter Jeremy Sladen’s green flag and it would be Stehouwer leading the charge into the first corner to grab the early lead as the rest of the field settled in behind him.

Stehouwer had company soon however as Johnny VanDoorn, who started on the inside of the second row directly behind the fellow Westsider, followed Stehouwer’s tire tracks all over the 3/8s mile. The first caution of the night was the biggest one as on lap 12, two of the top contenders, Dakota Carlson and Harold Fair Jr., collided coming down the front stretch and slammed head on into the turns one and two wall!

Both drivers were ok, but both of their machines were beyond repair and the two stout pilots were already done for the evening. On the restart, Stehouwer began to feel heavy pressure from VanDoorn when another turn of dramatics happened on lap 19 when Stehouwer suddenly slowed coming down the front stretch forcing the field to take evasive action. VanDoorn slipped by on the inside and would take the lead.

However, Stehouwer stopped in turn two to bring out the caution flag. VanDoorn was leading, but now he had Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame Driver, Three-Time Super Late Models Track Champion, and Hometown Favorite, Tim Felver and the two drivers started 1-2 on the next restart.

VanDoorn, the 2009 CRA Super Series Champion, was driving the Port City Race Cars House Car and Felver, driving the Howe Racing Enterprises Prototype House Car began a battle amongst chassis builders with both Presidents of each company, Harley Boeve (Port City Race Cars) and Chas Howe (Howe Racing Enterprises) in attendance and watching.

Throughout a series of cautions flags, VanDoorn would mix up his restarts each time to try and keep Felver and the rest of the field behind him. Soon, another Three-Time Super Late Models Track Champion, Dan Krzywosinski would catch up to Felver’s back bumper and the two drivers with a combined six Owosso titles between them would battle each other as well as try and keep VanDoorn close.

The final caution of the night flew on lap 87 setting up a final shootout with VanDoorn leading the charge to the green flag. Mike Root, who won the 47th annual Dixie Classic 100 at Owosso’s sister track to the Northeast, Dixie Motor Speedway the night before, began his charge towards the front and would get around both Krzywosinski and then Felver and set his sights on VanDoorn for the top spot.

By that point however, VanDoorn had built up enough of an advantage to keep Root behind him and after all was said and done, VanDoorn, in only his second ever appearance at Owosso Speedway would steer his Port City Race Cars Chevrolet into the D-L Auto Sales Victory Lane after Winning the North VS South Shootout 100.

Root settled for second with Felver, Krzywosinski, and Claude Plante Jr., finishing off the Top Five. Fast Qualifier Brent Jack finished sixth while pole-sitter Lee, Jimmy Gallagher, 18-year-old Chad Finley, and Jack Varney Jr., wrapped up the Top 10.

Earlier in the afternoon, Jack won the Port City Race Cars Fast Qualifier Award over the stout 22-car field with a lap measured at a 14.784 around the 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked paved oval.

The second and final round of the Big “O” Duels Series is on Saturday, September 18th with the running of the 2nd annual Heritage 100 as they’ll headline the nights’ festivities while be joined by the 15th annual Owosso Fall Nationals Tune-Up for the Shiawassee Shores Pro Stocks, Shattuck Specialty Advertising Pure Stocks, and Okemos Auto Service Sport Stocks.
