Exactly what is a Carnage Night? Modeled after the widely popular Eve of Destruction Series held at Owosso’s sister track to the Northeast, Dixie Motor Speedway, Carnage Night at the Big “O” is non-stop thrills and excitement featuring a wide variety of machines.
Here is an explanation of exactly what happens during one of these events. The one and only Carnage Night at the Big "O" is scheduled for Day III of the 15th annual Owosso Fall Nationals on Sunday, September 26th.
School Bus Race: The highlight of all destruction nights at any race track in North America, the School Bus Races; Full-size School Busses race around the 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked paved oval just like the cars and stars of the Weekly Local Racing Series. Because of the high-banks of the Big “O”, these mammoth machines can really get going around the oval and the excitement is non-stop! First Bus to take the checkered flag is the winner.
Trailer Race: Another headliner on Carnage Night is the Trailer Race, usually saved as the last event of the evening due to the sheer debris that results’ from these races. The object of the Trailer Race is to keep your trailer attached at all costs while negotiating around the 3/8s mile oval. Cars will have a trailer attached and must have “something” on the trailer. The event is usually scheduled for 12 laps, however, the race could end when it either reached its scheduled distance or only one car remained with its trailer attached.
Push and Pull Team Events: The Push and Pull Team Events are modeled after the Chain-Gang and Crash Car events seen primarily at Dixie Motor Speedway during their Eve of Destruction Nights.
The object of a Pull Team Event, also known as the Chain-Gang Race, is the front car, or truck, or van in some cases, pulls their teammate, who has no power, around the oval, but do control the brakes. First Team to complete the mandated distance wins!
For the Push Team Event, also known as the Crash Cars race, the scenario for this event is just the opposite of the Pull Team Race, which features disabled cars being propelled or pushed around the track by teammates shoving them around the oval. A truly hysterical event to watch and the first team to take the checkered flag wins.
Flagpole Race: Introduced to the Owosso Speedway in 2009 is the always exciting Flagpole Race. A huge Tractor Tire is placed at the center of the start / finish line and the object of the race is to run a regular lap around the oval and then the competitors must navigate around a tractor tire located at the center of the start / finish line to complete that lap. First one to complete the required number of laps wins!
Spectator Drags: Finally, Spectator Drags are an old school favorite. Fans in the grandstands get their chance to drive their passenger vehicles around the 3/8s mile in a one lap match against a fellow fan drag style. The winner moves on, the loser heads back to the parking lot. When two fans are left, it’s then best two out of three with the first driver to win two races declared the winner.
Fast Track Promotion Inc., is always looking at possibly adding another exciting event or two to the already action packed Carnage Nights. If there’s an event you’ve seen somewhere else or perhaps on SPEED TV’s “On The Edge” program that you think will be something to watch at the Big “O”, get in touch with the track staff by utilizing the tracks contact information.
