10jonessportfeature7172010Ovid, Michigan (Saturday, July 17, 2010): The Okemos Auto Service Sport Stocks 20-lap Feature was up next with Adam Whitaker and 13-year-old Rookie, Rachel Carpenter starting on the front row. Carpenter was the first to enter Turn One as the rest of the pack immediately began their ascension towards the front of the field.

Carpenter paced the field for the first five laps with two more female competitors, 14-year-old Amber Slagle who started eighth and 16-year-old Marisa Jones who started seventh, joining her.

Slagle went up to the patented third groove, better known as the Tim Felver / Bill Luckhurst Champions Lane and drove around Carpenter to grab the lead for herself on lap six and she brought Jones, who earlier in the day won a Heat Race, with her and the two teenage girls would wage a war all over the 3/8s mile to the roar and approval of the stellar crowd in attendance.

The lone caution came out on lap seven when the top two drivers in the season long points chase, 14-year-old Kyle Crump, the winner of the last two Features coming into the night, and 16-year-old Joey Rodgers collided heading into turn one and both spun. Neither driver “tapped out” so both went to the back and the battle up front between Slagle and Jones continued immediately after the green flag came back out.

Jones searched high and low trying to figure out a way around Slagle and finally drove around on lap 12 as the crowd again were on their feet cheering and screaming for the two teenagers who were battling tooth and nail like a couple of crafty veterans. With five laps to go, Slagle had regrouped and tried in vain to get back by Jones and the battle resumed.

Throughout the constant pressure, Jones was up to the challenge and the 16-year-old from Potterville, Michigan in her R. Knott Lawn Landscape and Snow Removal Dodge would hang on to score her first career Feature Win and received a standing ovation after she climbed out of the car for her efforts!

Slagle finished a career high second while 16-year-old Matt Vainner caught the two young ladies at the very end of the race, but settled for the last podium position in third. Crump fought his way back to fourth with veteran Steve Workman finishing off the Top Five. Rodgers got back to sixth with Carpenter, Jim Hammond, Scott Rodgers, and Whitaker rounding out the Top 10.

Vainner won his fifth Fast Qualifier award of the year as he went a 20.105 while Workman and Jones collected Heat Race triumphs.
