Here is a capsule look at what divisions you'll watch race every Saturday night at Owosso Speedway:
Affordable Tire and Service Center Pro Late Models: The Pro Late Models are one of the two premiere divisions at the Owosso Speedway. A unique variety of different made for racing machines can and do race together very competitively in this division. These cars are designed for the track with full tubular frames and primarily made for racing parts and pieces. The engines are cast iron blocks, but that is the only OEM part on the drive train in one of these rocket fast cars. You’ll find Outlaw (wedge) Bodies and Built Engines as well as Template Bodies (Similar to a NASCAR Sprint Cup or Nationwide Series Car) and a Built Engine or even the more economical “Crate” Engine under the hood. These cars will race around the 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked paved oval in the high 15 / low 16 second range and average over 100mph. An average Pro Late Model team will anywhere between $10-25,000 into their entire program.
Drive Train Specialists Modifieds: The second of two premiere divisions at the Big “O” These cars are almost completely Modified (Hence the name) with the one exception of a factory production front clip frame from a 1960 or newer American Made passenger car. These cars have a stock front sub frame with a tubular Pro Late Model style center and rear section of the frame. With its’ sleek outlaw open wheel body on them, they travel the Owosso Speedway at just about the same speeds and times as Pro Late Models, in the high 15 / low 16 second bracket around the 3/8s (0.375) mile high banked paved oval and average over 100mph. This division, first started in the state of Michigan in 1985 has evolved into one of the most popular divisions in the country with their uniqueness in body style and open cock pit design and have always been on of the most exciting divisions to watch year in and year out.
Shiawasse Shores Pro Stocks: The Pro Stocks Division at Owosso Speedway features cars that are either stock chassis or fabricated chassis with either a Home Built Body or the more sleek Template Body style. This division is for the drivers who are looking for something a little faster to drive than what the Pure Stocks and / or Sport Stocks can offer or for drivers with a Street Stock at neighboring tracks who want to add those extra parts and pieces to bring it to the Big “O” and compete at higher speeds with the same car, but at the same time, not break the bank and still be competitive. These cars top out in the high 16 / low 17 second range around the 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked paved oval with average speeds of over 90mph.
Shattuck Specialty Advertising Pure Stocks: If you’re looking for action, keep your eyes on this class as they will never fail to make any race night exciting. These cars are American Made, rear wheel drive cars with a stock frame and relatively stock suspension. These cars will almost always be trading paint with one another as three wide action is commonplace. Powered by a 350 or 400 cubic inch motor, you’ll see lots of horsepower on a smaller tire, creating one of the wildest features of the night. The Pure Stocks race around the 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked paved oval in the low / mid 19 second range and can get up to 80mph and more.
Okemos Auto Service Sport Stocks: Owosso Speedway’s entry level or beginners division; this class is designed to introduce new drivers into the world of short track racing as well as drivers who just want to have a good time and not spent a ton of money doing so and still be competitive. The Sport Stocks put on a great show at the Big “O” with constant three, four, and sometimes even five-wide racing! Most any American made 4 and 6 cylinder front wheel drive cars ONLY can compete and are legal in this division and run together very competitively. No modifications can be made to the vehicles, except for those alterations involving the safety of the driver. You can build your own race ready Sport Stock for less than $2,000. The Sport Stocks race around the 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked paved oval in the mid / high 19 second range and can reach speeds of almost 80mph.
Big “O” Duels Series Super Late Models: The premiere division at most short tracks for decades, the Outlaw Super Late Models are now an exclusive mini-series at Owosso Speedway and these cars are the top of the line when it comes to short track racing. These outlaw bodied cars feature the best of everything and you’ll find the best of the best drivers in this class, with drivers that race weekly coming from all over the Midwest and even Canada. The Super Late Models will race in two 100-lap Features that make up the Big “O” Duels Series. These cars will average close to 110mph around the 3/8s (0.375) mile high banked paved oval with top speeds measured at over 130mph in the middle of the straightaway. You can expect laps in the mid to upper 14 second bracket, while racing two and sometimes even three wide all night long! An average Outlaw Super Late Model will have upwards of $50,000 and more into a typical operation.
